Sunset Mesa under contract, memorial garden left barren - KKCO-TV

KKCO/KJCT)-- Two funeral homes in Montrose may soon have new owners, including the previous Sunset Mesa location. Renfrow Realty says it's currently under contract, and could not comment on who the new owners will be until after it’s officially been bought. Mesa County Coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield spoke at a Montrose Board of County Commissioners work session on February 11. He said “Sunset Mesa has sold and it's going to be up to him…. the building is sold but it will not be a funeral home,” said Dr. Thomas Canfield. Next to the funeral home tucked behind a broken green fence is Evergreen Terrace Memorial Park. A place formerly owned by Sunset Mesa’s Megan Hess. According to receipts, she charged $2,000 per plot for families to put their cremains. Randy McDonald says his grandparents were originally going to use Crippin Funeral Home until Megan Hess at Sunset Mesa offered them a better price. "He was a big hunter and he bought a plot two or three feet away from this life-size mountain lion brass or copper mountain lion,” said Randy McDonald. Randy says his grandparents paid upfront to be placed in that garden. Now everything has been removed, he says without the family's permission. Plaques have been pried off, headstones removed, and the garden is now left barren. "I never got a notice and I would have certainly have driven out there if I would have had the opportunity or would have known about it so I never got a call about it,” said McDonald. EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Memorial Park in El Paso received the Lone Star Legacy Park Award from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society during the association’s annual state conference hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department.Memorial Park is one of six Texas parks to receive the honor this year. The park, located in central El Paso, is managed and maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department. Originally called Veterans Memorial Park, it became an official city park in 1920. It is named in honor of the soldiers and sailors who served in the “Great War," World War I. Memorial Park has an indoor pool, a seniors and garden center, a playground, tennis courts and a softball field. Across the street is the Municipal Rose Garden with more than 1,500 rose bushes.“It’s always so meaningful when we are able to recognize one of our precious historical resources,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tracy Novak. “To be recognized by the TRAPS for statewide attention is of great importance to our community.”Memorial Park is the second city park to receive the Lone Star Legacy Park Award. In 2015, TRAPS recognized San Jacinto Plaza with the same award.A Lone Star Legacy Park is classified as a park that holds special prominence in the community and the state of Texas.
